why are we here?

well, sometimes when I am stuck at work, doing things that I do not want to do, and wishing all the time that I was somewhere else, doing something else, having a lot more fun. Its at those times I wonder (though I know I should be concentrating on finishing that unpleasant business rather than wondering) why are we here, on this earth? Are we here to devote ourselves to whatever profession we are in, and think about other stuff only in the little time after work. Or are we here to enjoy ourselves, have fun, do things we love, live by the saying that life is short, enjoy it while u can? Of course in the second case there is the question about where are we going to get the money for doing all those stuff.
There are always these people talking about striking a balance between work and personal life and blah blah. But has anyone every really struck that 'balance'. Is it possible to have a balanced life when everything needs to be done NOW. And if you spend your life trying to strike the balance would you not end up in a situation where you neither worked well not enjoyed well?
Then there are always these people whole 'enjoy' their profession and cannot think of doing anything else. How many of those people are there and how many of them are just deceiving themselves, making themselves believe that they do not want to do anything else?
To these questions you would often hear answers like 'prioritize', 'do time management', but if you try to do that stuff, are you simply not adding more stuff to the things that you want to do and creating even a bigger problem?

PS: I am in the camp that thinks that we should prioritize :)

Its very natural to feel that way and many people do. I would suggest that you should keep a balance and also move away from things you absolutely hate or are non-performant at. This might not be easy but you should try. By striking a balance I mean you should do stuff which you enjoy (your hobbies or interests) and also do the necessary stuff both at work & home. The balance should be ideally 70-30% but 50-50 is good.
For beginners just note down things which you do (all things @ work or home) which you like (all levels of liking). Try to see what % you are at. Do this systematically. Then try to increase the % of activites which you like to do by adding to them. Identifying what you like & don’t are very important. Also there are many things which at some point you didn’t like or didn’t experience but may be you will like it so keep an open mind when approaching stuff. Avoid labeling stuff before you experience it fully. Try to reduce activites which you don’t like. Push harder to start activities which you like.
Also when you are doing things you don’t like – keep telling yourself why this is necessary so that you can complete it and achieve something which you want. Say finish some non-interesting work so that you can start doing something you want. Also once you start doing more interesting activites other things will feel less boring.

I cannot wait to see your list of things you like and things you do not, and see you "systematically" sorting them out. Just add this whole listing and sorting process as one of the activities (hate or like u can decide) :p

Its from my personal experience that in time as such, when we wonder why we are doing this, when we should be doing that or when we may be somewhere else, the best way to come out is bring back ur hobbies to occupy u for some time.. Not to think much abt the work thats keeping us cross all the time, whether its office or at home.
See I have tried spending more quality time at net, than getting bored, or than just watch TV. I started reading my novels again, just to keep me busy all the time. I also got some sketch books too. and I do not think of office work again, once I step out of office.. Office is there, to work, but only till the time we are in office. If u ask me when I am at home what i was doing at office, I will just say blah blah blah,.. and i dont remember and i m not willing to remember too .. and its better that i dont remember..
And yes, as rahul said, its true that one should say Finish to start off with the new thing..

You know, i spent 2 overnights in office, just to finsih off my previous assignments so that i can travel to Canada without hassels from my previous manager.. and i proved it done.. But may be not everyone has that much of freedom to choose to do things right as they want.. so then we certainly have to plan things..

We as SE need to know the demands of the work and at home.. But main thing is when its very critical with anyone of them you cannot leave it.. Means u cannot leave ur work when its in critical/delivery stage.. and then u need a compromise with ur home.. It happens..

But there is no solution for this, except that u leave the job.. But remember that urge for leaving a job will only be a momentarily, so never ever decide to take some hasty step.. But see compromise is the only solution, and compromise in such a way that it doesn't hamper ur tomorrow.
